Italian criminal record certificate for Russia
How Italian citizens get a certificato del casellario giudiziale accepted in Russia: where to request it, the apostille from the Procura della Repubblica and the notarized Russian translation.
Italian citizens applying for a Russian temporary residence permit (RVP), permanent residence (VNZh) or another status are usually asked for a certificato del casellario giudiziale — the Italian criminal record certificate. Russian offices may also ask for the certificate of pending charges (certificato dei carichi pendenti), so check the list for your case before ordering.
Step 1. Request the certificate
The certificate is issued by the criminal record office (ufficio locale del casellario) at the Procura della Repubblica. You can request it:
- in person or through a representative at any Procura's casellario office;
- online, where the service is available, and collect it later;
- from abroad, through an Italian consulate or a representative in Italy.
The request involves stamp duties (marca da bollo). Ask for the certificate for use abroad, so that it can be apostilled.
Step 2. Apostille
Italy and Russia are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the certificate needs an apostille. For judicial documents such as the casellario certificate, the apostille is issued by the Procura della Repubblica — usually the one in the same district where the certificate was issued.
Italian certificates differ slightly from one office to another: the header, the layout of the apostille and the wording of the result depend on the Procura that issued them. That does not matter to Russian authorities, but it matters to the translation: every certificate is translated as it is, not from a template of another region.
Step 3. Notarized translation into Russian
We translate into Russian, with the notary's certification:
- the full text of the certificate — header, your data, the purpose, the result ("NULLA" when the record is clean);
- the apostille, every numbered item;
- revenue stamps, seals and signatures, marked in the translation.
Your name and place of birth follow the spelling of your passport translation. Italian place names are given in their established Russian form (Roma → Рим), not transliterated letter by letter.
Timing
Russian migration offices usually accept a certificate issued no more than three months before filing. The certificate is often issued quickly in Italy; the apostille and delivery to Russia add time.
